Osmosis Treatment & Services

Osmosis can become a serious problem for fibreglass boats if it is left untreated. While it is unlikely to sink your vessel, addressing the problem at an early stage can help prevent more extensive and costly repairs later.

One of the most common signs of osmosis is blistering within the gelcoat. These blisters can contain corrosive chemicals and may produce a vinegar-like smell when opened. Moisture readings taken from the hull can then be used to confirm the extent of the problem and determine the treatment required.

Our osmosis treatment process begins by removing the affected gelcoat back to the fibreglass. The hull is then carefully grit blasted to open up the blisters and prepare the surface before being steam pressure washed several times to remove contamination.

Once prepared, 100°C steam vacuum equipment is used to help draw moisture from the hull. Moisture readings are taken throughout the drying process so that progress can be monitored and the hull is allowed to dry thoroughly before any coatings are applied.

After the hull has reached suitable moisture levels, epoxy fillers are used to skim and repair the surface, followed by protective epoxy coatings. The hull can then be finished with the customer’s preferred protection, including antifouling or Coppercoat.

Our osmosis services can include osmosis advice and prevention, osmosis protection, hull preparation, treatment and repair, re-antifouling, copper coating and gelcoat repairs. Whether you have noticed early signs of blistering or require a more extensive hull treatment, the condition of your vessel can be assessed before recommending the appropriate work.
